Matiere Premiere: French Niche Perfumes by Aurélien Guichard
A French niche perfumery maison founded in 2019 by Aurélien Guichard in Grasse. The name — French for 'raw material' — encapsulates the brand's entire philosophy: every fragrance is built around a single exceptional natural ingredient, used in high concentration to reveal its most authentic texture and facets.
History and philosophy
Matière Première was born in 2019 from a project deeply rooted in Grasse, the historic heart of world perfumery. Aurélien Guichard, a seventh-generation perfumer from the same city, had already built a distinguished career at major commercial fragrance houses — including Givaudan, Firmenich and Takasago — before choosing to create a brand that would fully express his own vision of raw materials. As early as 2016, he had begun cultivating centifolia rose, tuberose and lavandin organically on his own land in Grasse, a territory recognised by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage: those very fields would become the productive foundation of the brand.
The guiding principle is as simple as it is demanding: build each fragrance around a single exceptional natural ingredient, used at maximum concentration, within a short and uncluttered formula that allows its beauty to shine without embellishment. Guichard is the only perfumer in the world who personally cultivates his own raw materials for a niche maison, ensuring complete control of the supply chain from organic farming to the finished article.
The style
Matière Première has a recognisable aesthetic signature: stripped-back formulas, immediate projection and pronounced longevity, with a 'lead' ingredient supported by one or two 'guest' materials chosen to amplify its facets without overwhelming its identity. The olfactory families range from oriental floral to woody, from musky to resinous, offered both as eau de parfum and — for the most celebrated titles — as extrait de parfum at an even higher concentration. Recurring hallmarks include:
- Key ingredients of certified traceability, often with a named geographical origin (centifolia rose from Grasse, sandalwood from Australia, saffron from Greece, vanilla from Madagascar, frankincense from Somalia).
- An 'amplified single-material' approach: every composition begins from a central ingredient used in overdose, with only a handful of complementary elements orbiting around it.
- A dual concentration range: eau de parfum for the main collection, extrait de parfum for richer, more intimate versions of the bestsellers.
- A restrained and consistent visual aesthetic, in keeping with the brand's commitment to artisanal quality.
The most celebrated fragrances
The collection comprises titles conceived as olfactory portraits of individual raw materials; below are the most representative of the brand's offering.
- Radical Rose — An eau de parfum built on centifolia rose absolute grown in Grasse, accompanied by saffron, pepper, patchouli and labdanum: an intense oriental floral, never romantic, with bold projection.
- Santal Austral — Organic Australian sandalwood is the heart of this woody oriental composition, supported by iris and tonka for a creamy, enveloping texture.
- Encens Suave — A Somali frankincense resin forms the centrepiece of an amber and carnal accord, enriched with labdanum, benzoin and coffee: one of the maison's darkest and most seductive propositions.
- Crystal Saffron — Greek saffron oil amplified by musks and incense, in a dry and mineral balance that draws out the metallic facets of the spice.
- French Flower — Tuberose grown in Grasse takes centre stage, with orange blossom in support: a rich and creamy floral that explores the more carnal side of the white flower.
