How a Reed Diffuser Works

The reeds, in rattan or synthetic fibre, draw the liquid upward by capillary action and expose it to the air, where it slowly evaporates. The release is constant and needs no intervention: no flame, no socket, no daily upkeep.

Performance depends on three things: how many reeds are submerged, the room temperature and the air turnover. More reeds mean more scent but faster consumption, so it is worth starting with half the set and adding only if needed.

Choosing the Right Size

An undersized diffuser goes unnoticed; an oversized one becomes intrusive. As a guide:

100 ml — bathrooms, entrances and rooms up to 15 sq m. Average life 2-3 months.

200-250 ml — bedrooms and studies up to 30 sq m. Average life 4-5 months.

500 ml — living rooms and spaces up to 50 sq m. Average life 6-8 months.

XL formats of 1 litre and above — open plans, hallways and commercial spaces, with proportionally longer reeds.

Upkeep and Lifespan

To keep the output steady, flip the reeds once every seven to ten days: the saturated end goes back into the liquid and the clean end returns to the air. There is no need to do it more often, and flipping daily only shortens the life of the product.

When the reeds darken or stop carrying scent they should be replaced, even if liquid remains: many houses offer refills with a fresh set of reeds, more economical and more sustainable than buying a complete diffuser. Always place it away from direct heat sources and on a protected surface, as the compound can damage varnished wood.
