Amouage: Niche Perfumes from Oman

A fine fragrance house founded in 1983 in Muscat, Sultanate of Oman, by Sayyid Hamad bin Hamoud Al Busaidi at the behest of Sultan Qaboos bin Said. The house's defining character is the fusion of Omani and Arab aromatic tradition — incense, oud and resins — with the compositional techniques of European perfumery, resulting in fragrances of remarkable complexity and longevity.

History and philosophy

Amouage was established in 1983 in Muscat as a project to revive the ancient art of Omani perfumery, conceived by the ruling Al Busaidi family and envisioned from the outset as a «gift of kings»: the earliest flacons were not sold but presented to visiting heads of state as diplomatic gifts. The house's first fragrance, now known as Gold, was entrusted to French perfumer Guy Robert — creator of works for Hermès, Rochas and Dior — who worked with the finest Omani raw materials, in particular the silver frankincense of Dhofar, regarded as among the most precious in the world.

Over time Amouage has established itself on the international stage whilst never abandoning its roots: Oman has historically been a crossroads of the frankincense and myrrh trade, and this heritage permeates every collection the house produces. Perfumers are drawn from Paris, Grasse, Geneva and New York, working Omani and Middle Eastern ingredients — agarwood, myrrh, Omani rose — in dialogue with the accords of Western perfumery.

The style

The olfactory signature of Amouage is defined by the systematic use of olibanum (frankincense), which runs as a thread through almost every collection, alongside oud, resins, musks and Damask rose. The compositions tend towards density and staying power, with intricate pyramids and generous projection; the predominant concentration is eau de parfum, with certain lines also available as extrait de parfum. The most frequently encountered fragrance families are oriental, chypre and woody spicy, with forays into grand-structure floral oriental.

  • Signature Collection — the historic heart of the house, comprising paired men's and women's titles that explore oriental and floral accords drawn from Omani inspiration.
  • Library Collection — a numbered unisex series (Opus I, II, III…) launched in 2010, dedicated to olfactory studies of individual families or raw materials, conceived without gender classification.
  • The Attars — oil concentrates in traditional Arabic format, embodying the oldest form of Omani perfumery.
  • The Essences — a line of exceptionally high-concentration extracts that amplifies the rarest raw materials in the catalogue.
  • Odyssey Collection — a more recent series offering a contemporary reading of the house's heritage.

The most celebrated fragrances

Among the more than one hundred and fifty references in the catalogue, certain titles have secured a defining place within the international niche perfumery landscape.

  • Gold Woman / Gold Man — the inaugural fragrance of 1983, signed by Guy Robert; a richly wrought floral oriental accord of incense, rose and musks. The men's version presents a spiced, woody structure.
  • Jubilation XXV Man — an oriental fougère from 2007 with a signature by Bertrand Duchaufour; an opening of olibanum and dark fruits, a heart of oud, myrrh and spices, and a base of amber and oakmoss. Among the most admired men's titles the house has produced.
  • Interlude Man — a woody oriental from 2012 with notes of incense, opoponax, agarwood and leather; over time it has built a devoted following among enthusiasts of complex perfumery.
  • Lyric Woman — a floral oriental with a heart of rose and incense, considered one of the most balanced expressions of the Amouage style.
  • Epic Woman — a spiced floral oriental opening with cumin and cinnamon, a heart of Damask rose and tea, and a base of oud, frankincense and sandalwood; an evocation of the spice route in the house's perfumery.
