Akro: French Niche Perfumes by Olivier Cresp

An artistic perfume house founded in London in 2018 by Anaïs Cresp and master perfumer Olivier Cresp. The brand builds every fragrance around the theme of sensory addiction — coffee, smoke, whisky, cannabis — rendered with an aesthetic that fuses British urban energy with the technical rigour of Grasse.

History and philosophy

Akro was born from the meeting of two generations of a family with deep roots in the perfumery of Grasse. Anaïs Cresp, founder of the house, spent time in Ladbroke Grove in the heart of London, where the smells of the city — flower stalls, coffee shops, Irish pubs, smoke hanging in the air — gave her a precise idea: to turn everyday vices into wearable fragrances. To bring it to life, she enlisted her father Olivier, a master perfumer responsible for some of the most recognised compositions on the mass market.

The name Akro derives from the French accro, meaning addicted or unable to resist. This choice distils the brand's vision: fragrances not as adornment, but as olfactory records of lived experience — a forbidden or irresistible pleasure crystallised in molecules. The house is based in Ladbroke Grove, and every fragrance in the debut collection was composed entirely by Olivier Cresp, drawing on the palette of Firmenich, the house he has collaborated with since 1992.

The style

Akro fragrances sit predominantly within the aromatic, gourmand, leathery and smoky families, with a direct narrative approach: each title corresponds to a recognisable addiction, rendered through notes that are unusual even within niche perfumery — sea kelp, whisky, cumin, tar, ink. The standard concentration is eau de parfum, with extrait de parfum introduced for a number of more recent releases. The entire range is unisex.

  • Inaugural collection (2018): the founding core of the brand, composed entirely by Olivier Cresp around iconic vices such as smoke, cannabis, chocolate and whisky.
  • Range expansion (2022–2023): new titles exploring visual and tactile addictions, including tattooing and pâtisserie, while maintaining conceptual continuity with the brand's origins.
  • Extrait de parfum format: introduced gradually for select references, offering greater olfactory density and extended longevity.
  • Understated visual identity: clean-lined flacons, a direct graphic identity, with no nods to traditional luxury.

The best-known products

The range spans more than fifteen unisex references. Among those that have defined the identity of the house:

  • Awake — a strikingly realistic espresso accord with spiced cardamom and a vanilla base; part of the 2018 collection.
  • Haze — an aromatic interpretation of cannabis through eucalyptus, mint, wormwood and clary sage, over a base of patchouli and leather; launched in 2018.
  • Smoke — a smoky, tobacco-driven composition built on tobacco, cade oil and benzoin, softened by tonka in the base; one of the original 2018 releases.
  • Malt — a leathery, boozy fragrance with a whisky accord, sea kelp, rum and patchouli; part of the inaugural 2018 collection.
  • Ink — a 2022 eau de parfum inspired by tattooing, built around black ink, birch, vetiver and jasmine, with a cool, smoky profile.
