Born to Stand Out: Niche Perfumes from Korea

A niche perfumery maison founded in Seoul, South Korea and officially launched in 2022 by creative director Jun Lim. The brand is defined by a deliberately subversive aesthetic — provocative names, white flacons with red lettering — and an entirely unisex range created in collaboration with leading international noses.

History and philosophy

BORNTOSTANDOUT was born from Jun Lim's decision to leave a career in banking and build a radically personal perfumery project. Development began in 2020, with the official launch in 2022 from the Itaewon district of Seoul, an area renowned for its cultural energy and openness to aesthetic cross-pollination. The name is a statement of intent: standing apart from the norm as an act of identity, not mere provocation.

The brand's philosophy takes the Confucian values of social conformity and upends them through fragrance. Every scent is conceived as a refusal of homogeneity: explicit titles, unconventional raw materials, and compositions that make no concession to easy approval. In February 2025, L'Oréal's BOLD venture capital fund invested in the brand, recognising its global growth potential whilst affirming its creative identity.

The aesthetic

BORNTOSTANDOUT entrusts its creations to European-trained noses — among them Olivier Cresp, Frank Voelkl, Florian Gallo, Honorine Blanc, Dora Baghriche, and Hamid Merati-Kashani — translating the founder's concepts into compositions that pair natural extracts with high-quality synthetic molecules. The flacon, curved and enveloping, reinterprets the white porcelain of the Joseon dynasty (1392–1897): the carmine-red lettering breaks the purity of the white with the same logic that drives the fragrances themselves. All eau de parfum in the range carry high concentrations in the region of 30–40%, ensuring lasting sillage and projection.

  • Unisex fragrances with structured olfactory pyramids, predominantly within the woody, musky, gourmand, and oriental families.
  • Deliberately provocative names that anticipate the sensory character of each scent, with no concessions to conventional marketing.
  • Systematic collaborations with leading French and international composition houses, delivering formulation quality in keeping with the standards of European niche perfumery.
  • Packaging inspired by classical Korean aesthetics, reinterpreted in a contemporary idiom through a red-and-white two-tone palette and organic forms.

The best-known fragrances

The catalogue spans more than fifty eau de parfum references. Among the titles that have helped establish the brand internationally:

  • Dirty Rice — a composition by Olivier Cresp; creamy and musky in character, with milky undertones and warm woody accords.
  • Fig Porn — by Florian Gallo; green fig treated in a gourmand register, with a musky, fruity dry-down.
  • Indecent Cherry — again by Florian Gallo; fresh, lively cherry over a woody base, one of the most critically acclaimed fragrances in the range.
  • Unholy Oud — a composition by Dora Baghriche; Laotian oud over an opening of incense and citrus, with a base of sandalwood, patchouli, and vanilla.
  • Naked Laundry — a clean, enveloping musky accord, among the most wearable entries in the main collection.
