Molton Brown: Luxury Bath and Body from London
A British maison founded in 1971 by Caroline Burstein and Michael Collis in a salon on South Molton Street, Mayfair, London. The brand has built its identity around botanical formulas, high-concentration fragrances and an unmistakably English aesthetic expressed through bath, body and wearable perfumery.
History and philosophy
In 1971, Caroline Burstein and Michael Collis opened a hair salon at 58 South Molton Street, in the heart of Mayfair. From the very beginning, the founders mixed their own formulas by hand, favouring botanical bases and natural ingredients at a time when the cosmetics industry was turning wholesale to synthetics. The brand's name came from combining South Molton Street with Browns, the family's fashion boutique — two references that firmly root Molton Brown in a distinctly London world of creativity and refinement.
In 1984, production moved to the founders' country residence in Elsenham, Essex, where herbs and botanicals were grown directly in the garden. The brand has never left England since: the majority of its products are still made at the Elsenham facility today. In 2005, Molton Brown joined the Japanese Kao Corporation, which has preserved its stylistic continuity while supporting its international expansion. In 2012, the brand was granted a Royal Warrant by Queen Elizabeth II for the supply of toiletries.
The style
Molton Brown's defining characteristic is the coherence between fragrance and formula: each line expresses a single olfactory accord across multiple formats, from shower gel to eau de parfum, from hand wash to body lotion. Raw materials range from exotic spices to British botanicals, with a preference for highly recognisable ingredients — Madagascan black pepper, coastal cypress, oud — worked at elevated concentrations to ensure longevity and projection. The wearable perfumery range, available in EDT and EDP, is developed in collaboration with independent international perfumers.
- Orange & Bergamot — the brand's first signature collection, launched in 1984, remains the definitive citrus reference in the catalogue.
- Re-charge Black Pepper — an aromatic, spicy accord built around black pepper, available across multiple concentrations and body formats.
- Coastal Cypress & Sea Fennel — a fresh, marine family with notes of cypress and sea fennel, conceived for everyday wear.
- Mesmerising Oudh Accord & Gold — an opulent proposition featuring oud and golden notes, among the most intense references in the catalogue.
- Navigations Through Scent — a niche collection launched in 2011, inspired by places around the world, with more complex formulas and ingredients of exceptional quality.
