Molinard: Historic Grasse Perfumery Since 1849
Founded in 1849 in Grasse, in the heart of Provence, Molinard is one of the oldest perfume houses in the world still in family hands. Five generations have followed the same calling: translating the raw materials of the Côte d'Azur into fragrances of unmistakable character, balancing Grassois classicism with contemporary exploration.
History and philosophy
The house was established in 1849 by Hyacinthe Molinard, who opened a small boutique in the centre of Grasse selling floral waters and eau de Cologne. Its reputation grew quickly, its clientele became international, and in 1900 the maison expanded by acquiring a Provençal bastide whose metal distillery had been designed by Gustave Eiffel — a site that still houses the museum, laboratory and showroom today. In 2010, official recognition as an Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant confirmed the artisanal excellence of a house that has remained wholly independent.
Molinard's philosophy rests on a continuity that has rarely been broken: each new collection speaks to the house's historical archive while remaining free to explore less conventional olfactory families and raw materials. Its deep ties to the Grasse region translate into a particular attentiveness to Provençal floral essences — mimosa, tuberose, violet, jasmine — rendered with a contemporary sensibility.
The style
Molinard's catalogue moves between classical-school soliflores and structured orientals, taking in material-led fragrances in which a single ingredient — patchouli, vanilla, oud, leather — becomes the pivot of the entire composition. The flacons, historically created in collaboration with Baccarat and René Lalique, remain an integral part of the maison's aesthetic identity; the house has always treated the bottle as an extension of the fragrance itself.
- The Les Éléments collection brings together eau de parfum compositions built around a single raw material: Patchouli, Vanille, Tubéreuse Vertigineuse, Iris and Fleur d'Oranger, among others.
- The Habanita line continues and reinterprets the 1921 fragrance, available in several concentrations and versions.
- The Collection Icônes gathers the maison's historic perfumes, including Nirmala and Molinard de Molinard.
- The Collection Privée presents more elaborate creations for those seeking greater complexity and refinement.
- The Parfums d'Ambiance range extends certain signature fragrances into home scents, creating an olfactory continuity between what one wears and one's living space.
The most celebrated creations
Five references stand out as the most representative of the house's history and olfactory language.
- Habanita — created in 1921, it is considered the first feminine oriental in Western perfumery to foreground vetiver; a chord of geranium, rose, jasmine and oakmoss that left a lasting mark on the history of parfumerie.
- Nirmala — an exotic floral fragrance with a heart of tropical flowers and fruits, and one of the most characteristic expressions of the maison's sensory, material-led approach.
- Patchouli Intense — an eau de parfum that interprets patchouli through an oriental boisé lens, with gourmand depth and a deliberately assertive character.
- Tubéreuse Vertigineuse — a soliflore devoted to tuberose, one of the most complex and beguiling floral materials in the Grassois tradition.
- Molinard de Molinard — a floral-green-boisé composition from the 1970s, retained in the catalogue as a testament to the house's classical savoir-faire.
