History and philosophy
Miller Harris was established in London in 2000 by Lyn Harris, a British perfumer trained in Paris and later in Grasse at Robertet, one of the world's leading suppliers of natural aromatic ingredients. At its founding, it was among the first British niche maisons to be led by a homegrown perfumer, at a time when the international landscape was redefining the boundaries of independent perfumery. In 2012 a private investment fund acquired a stake in the brand; Lyn Harris gradually stepped back from the creative directorship in 2014, retaining an advisory role.
The original vision remains intact: every fragrance is created without restrictive commercial briefs, leaving the perfumer free to draw inspiration from poetry, memory and landscape. The brand has held the Butterfly Mark certification since 2018 and sources natural raw materials from sustainable, traceable supply chains. All products are vegan and free from phthalates, artificial colorants and parabens.
The style
The defining characteristic of Miller Harris is its rootedness in botanicals: every composition begins with quality natural ingredients, handled with both technical rigour and a narrative spirit. The style ranges from the aromatic-citrus and green families of the early years through to musky orientals and complex florals, with a preference for eau de parfum concentration. Over the years the maison has collaborated with internationally respected noses including Mathieu Nardin, Bertrand Duchaufour, Sidonie Lancesseur and Julie Pluchet.
- Fragrances conceived as unisex, with olfactory structures that favour the legibility of individual raw materials.
- A frequent use of green notes, quality citrus ingredients (Calabrian bergamot, petitgrain, neroli) and woody or musky base notes.
- A line dedicated to literature, the Stories Collection, in which each fragrance translates a passage from a literary work into olfactory language.
- A certified sustainable approach, with full traceability of raw materials and vegan-friendly formulations.
Most celebrated fragrances
The Miller Harris catalogue spans more than seventy-five references and includes eau de parfum, extrait de parfum and travel formats. Among the fragrances that have come to define the maison's identity, the following stand out in particular:
- L'Air de Rien — Originally created as a bespoke fragrance for Jane Birkin, this is a woody oriental built around musk, amber, oakmoss and dry vanilla: intimate, direct and close-wearing.
- Tea Tonique — A unisex aromatic spicy fragrance by Lyn Harris and Mathieu Nardin. Italian bergamot, green tea, maté and birch form a fresh, tannic structure inspired by dawn over a tea plantation.
- Citron Citron — A citrus eau de parfum evoking the lemon groves of the Mediterranean: Sicilian lemon, orange, lime and cardamom over a base of green musk and Moroccan cedarwood.
- Lumière Dorée — A unisex fragrance by Mathieu Nardin, centred on neroli and petitgrain from the same bitter orange tree, with bergamot, jasmine and pale musks in the base.
- Rose Silence — Rose, blackcurrant and cashmere musk in a modern floral composition, balanced between transparency and sensory softness.
