Hermetica: Alcohol-Free Niche Perfumes from Paris

A Parisian maison founded in 2018 by Clara and John Molloy, Hermetica Paris reimagines perfumery through a patented alcohol-free formula that blends natural ingredients with synthetic molecules. The result is a range of unisex eaux de parfum that simultaneously scent and moisturise the skin, with a creative signature rooted in green chemistry.

History and philosophy

Hermetica Paris was established in Paris in 2018 by Clara and John Molloy, with the stated ambition of redefining the relationship between fragrance and skin. The name evokes the Corpus Hermeticum, the medieval alchemical treatise, translating that ideal of the transformation of matter into a contemporary fragrance project: finding the perfect olfactory elixir by combining, without restriction, certified natural ingredients and next-generation synthetic molecules.

At the heart of the project is the patented Innoscent™ technology, developed in collaboration with Symrise, which replaces alcohol with a moisturising, water-based carrier. Some of the raw materials used are derived from by-products — including molecules extracted from bagasse, a residue of sugar cane processing — in keeping with a commitment to sustainability that extends to the packaging: recycled glass flacons and certified paper cartons.

The aesthetic

Hermetica's fragrances are created by perfumers Aliénor Massenet and Philippe Paparella-Paris, and are organised into thematic families — oriental, woody, floral, and green — united by a distinctive technical quality: the absence of alcohol means each fragrance expresses itself immediately on the skin, with none of the alcoholic opening typical of conventional eaux de parfum, feeling soft and close-to-skin from the very first spray. All fragrances are vegan and cruelty-free.

  • Source¹ EDP — the maison's «prima materia»: a citrus-oriental accord of bergamot, dry amber, and fresh wood, designed to serve as a layering base for the entire collection.
  • Vertical Ambers — a family of warm, resinous fragrances exploring oud, amber, and precious woods.
  • The Door — a trio of woody, sweet compositions including Patchoulight and Sandalsun.
  • Emerald Stairways — a fresh, green line with herbaceous and spiced profiles.
  • Dry Waters — an aquatic and floral family, with delicate, clean tones.

The best-known fragrances

The collection comprises over twenty-five titles, all presented as eaux de parfum. Among the most celebrated within the international fragrance community:

  • Source¹ — the maison's founding fragrance: luminous bergamot, dry amber, and fresh wood on an Innoscent™ base, designed for layering with other fragrances in the collection.
  • Verticaloud — a woody oriental with rose oil, a Middle Eastern oud accord, and a vibrant amber molecule; a key reference point for those exploring the oud family.
  • Sandalsun — a gourmand-woody fragrance with sandalwood essence, hazelnut, vanilla, and rose absolute; evocative and enveloping, one of the most sought-after titles in The Door line.
  • Rosefire — an intense rose absolute with davana and violet essence, for a modern, dense, and unconventional rose.
  • Patchoulight — a contemporary reimagining of patchouli, with concrete iris, violet, and sandalwood; green and deep without heaviness.
