History and philosophy

Czech & Speake was established in 1978 by Frank Sawkins, a designer by training, who chose Jermyn Street — London's pre-eminent district for men's luxury — as the home for his venture. The business began with a line of fine bathroom accessories and brassware, crafted with the same artisanal care as the finest tailoring ateliers in the area. Two years later, in 1980, Sawkins introduced the first fragrance, laying the foundation for what would become the most recognisable facet of the brand.

The house has remained family-owned and independent, still guided by the Sawkins family today. This continuity is reflected in a rigorous approach to formulation: every fragrance is developed using essential oils, resins, and carefully selected aromatic ingredients, with no recourse to low-grade synthetics. Production, though now based in Italy, has not altered the distinctly British character of the house.

The style

Czech & Speake fragrances are defined by a classical aromatic sensibility, with a marked inclination towards woody, aromatic, and resinous families. Nose John Stephen has shaped a recognisable olfactory signature over the years: high-quality materials, structures well balanced between citrus freshness and boisée depth, with no concessions to market trends. The brand also covers the quality men's grooming segment, with shaving and body care products that share the same philosophy of fine raw materials.

  • Aromatic and woody fragrances with bases of vetiver and noble woods, built on pure essential oils.
  • A range of eau de cologne and eau de parfum that renders the same olfactory signatures at different concentrations.
  • Shaving and male grooming products formulated with the same rigorous attention to ingredients.
  • Frosted glass flacons inspired by the aesthetic of nineteenth-century apothecaries, in keeping with the brand's historic identity.

The best-known products

The range encompasses some twenty fragrances developed over more than four decades, each with its own distinct olfactory identity. Among the most celebrated within the enthusiast community:

  • No.88 — The brand's founding fragrance, launched in 1981 and inspired by the original address of Sawkins's studio on Jermyn Street. An aromatic woody structure with bergamot at the opening, a heart of rose, geranium, and frangipani, and a base of vetiver and sandalwood.
  • Neroli — The house's very first fragrance, from 1981, inspired by an eighteenth-century formula. A fresh, floral profile that is both versatile and long-lasting.
  • Frankincense & Myrrh — A contemporary interpretation of biblical spices, deep and resinous, and among the most admired for its complexity.
  • Cuba — An aromatic fragrance built around an accord of rum, lime, and tobacco, with a bold and distinctive character.
  • Spanish Cedar — A woody eau de parfum with a fruity opening and a warm heart of cedarwood, sandalwood, and galbanum.
