Azman: Niche Perfumes from the Middle East

An Emirati maison founded in Dubai in 2021 by Husen Baba, Azman — meaning 'hours' or 'moments' in Arabic — was created with a clear purpose: to restore oud's full complexity without sacrificing wearability, crafting fragrances that move across cultures and olfactory traditions.

History and philosophy

Husen Baba came to perfumery after a career in creative advertising for international luxury brands. An encounter with Frédéric Malle proved the decisive turning point, leading him to train in Grasse, the heartland of French perfumery, where he developed a sensibility that blends Western technical rigour with a deep knowledge of Eastern raw materials.

The name Azman distils the brand's philosophy: fragrance as the capture of an instant, of a precise emotion held in time. Each creation is born from a collaboration with a different nose, chosen for their ability to tell a specific story rather than for any stylistic affinity with the house. The result is a deliberately varied catalogue, held together not by a uniform aesthetic but by a shared pursuit of raw material quality.

The style

Oud is Azman's gravitational centre, yet it is treated in an unconventional way: never heavy or self-referential, always woven into compositions that bring it into dialogue with contrasting olfactory families — spicy-oriental, woody-aromatic, floral — with a constant eye on everyday wearability. The choice of perfumers is deliberately eclectic: independent noses, formulators from major houses, and industry artists all share the same creative platform.

  • Oriental-woody compositions built on oud as a structural note rather than a decorative one.
  • Use of rare ingredients sourced from diverse regions — South-East Asia, the Middle East, the Mediterranean basin — with French technical expertise at their core.
  • Collaborations with perfumers from varied backgrounds: from independents such as Antonio Gardoni and Prin Lomros to house perfumers like Julien Rasquinet.
  • A predominant concentration in extrait de parfum, to draw out the full depth of the raw materials.
  • A narrative approach to fragrance: every title evokes a character, a mood, or a precise moment in time.

The best-known fragrances

The Azman catalogue spans around fifteen references, all unisex, released between 2021 and 2025. The following are the creations that best express the identity of the house.

  • Majnoon — A spicy-oriental fragrance by Prin Lomros (2022): an opening of coffee, pomegranate, saffron and cinnamon; a heart of tobacco, leather and rose; a deep base of Thai and Indian oud, incense and patchouli.
  • Risk — A 2023 creation by Antonio Gardoni and the most daring in the catalogue: Siam oud, tuberose, yuzu, benzoin and ambergris in a radical, polarising composition that sits well outside the house's usual comfort zone.
  • Naked Forest — Launched in 2024, one of Azman's rare forays into woody-aromatic territory: green and fresh, with a chypre-fougère structure reinterpreted for a contemporary sensibility.
  • Crown of Fire — A 2025 extrait de parfum by Jerry Lin: a dry opening of bay leaf and pepper with smoky peat; a floral-tobacco heart; an animalic, resinous base of oud and Mysore sandalwood.
  • Nocturnal Immortal — A 2025 fragrance by Julien Rasquinet: a citrus-aromatic opening of bitter orange, mandarin and rosemary; a heart of immortelle and lavender; a base of Haitian oud, vetiver and labdanum.
